Description

Dynamic Barcelona is all about architecture, from the magnificent medieval buildings of the Gothic Quarter to the Modernist movement typified by the work of Antoni Gaudi including the amazing Sagrada Familia. Old world charm meets modern architectural genius in Valencia, where the abundant Gothic riches of a 15th century golden age contrast with the innovative and avant-garde buildings of the new millennium. Dating back to Roman times, Palma de Mallorca features an amazing gothic Cathedral with some of the world’s largest stained glass windows, the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Art and the mystical Caves of Drach. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and its magnificent harbor made it a logical trading port as far back as the Phoenicians; today it’s renowned for an active culture of festivals, art and fashion.

Rambling vineyards and charming native farms cling to the steep sides of the Douro River Valley, creating an incomparable backdrop to one of Europe’s most unspoiled regions and to Port country— the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Sail roundtrip from Porto, the beautiful “City of Bridges”; visit Regua, the ‘capital’ of the Douro Valley; and marvel at Salamanca, the UNESCO-designated “Golden City.” Taste wines from historic wineries and soak up the genuine beauty of one of Europe’s most unadulterated landscapes.

A Glimpse into Gaudi´s Houses: Casa Batlló, Casa Mila

Visit Antoni Gaudí's two most important houses in one afternoon. Visit the Casa Batlló and marvel at the different rooms that make it up. Enter Casa Milà and be impressed by how a middle-class family lived in Barcelona more than 100 years ago. Depending on the option selected, we will begin the tour outside Casa Batlló, as its imposing façade will leave you in awe. Its undulating balconies and the bright colours of Antoni Gaudí’s modernist architecture will remind you of the marine world. Once inside Casa Batlló, we can enter the mind of Antoni Gaudí, perhaps Barcelona's most important architect. As we walk through the different rooms of the house, we will discover how the Batlló family lived at the beginning of the 20th century. We will pass through the main floor, where we will find the great hall, with a unique view of Passeig de Gràcia. We pass through the main dining room and the modernist patio. Through the courtyard we will reach the Dragon's Roof, where the colour blue dominates and where looking through the glass you will feel like you are under the sea. On the roof we will admire the chimneys, in which Gaudí took care of the smallest details and which are made with his typical technique, the trencadís. There is also a dragon on the roof, will you be able to find it? In this incredible space of the Casa Batlló, you will have a short time to take pictures and enjoy the view. At the end of the visit, if you have chosen this option, we will go to Casa Milà. Popularly known as La Pedrera, where we will start the guided tour to discover its impressive stone façade. The undulation of the façade, combined with the wrought-iron railings, will remind you of a seabed full of seaweed. We will have the opportunity to walk through the neighbours' flat, which will be like a journey back in time. Your guide will explain how a bourgeois family lived there at the beginning of the 20th century, as the house is completely furnished with period furniture. Look at all the details, as Gaudí even considered the design of the door handles. Discover the two courtyards of Casa Milà: the Patio de las Flores, full of murals that decorate this place, and the Patio de las Mariposas, where a butterfly is perfectly represented. Walk through the impressive attic, known as the "whale attic" for its shape, which makes you feel like you are entering the interior of a large living creature. Made up of more than 270 catenary arches, it will remind you of the skeleton of a whale. Not forgetting the Warriors' Rooftop, from where you can enjoy a magnificent 360º view of Barcelona. It takes its name from the chimneys that represent the warriors and guardians of Casa Milà.

Estoril Coast and Sintra Tour from Lisbon

You will see historic buildings, admire natural wonders, stroll through landscaped gardens and be able to savour local delicacies on this journey to the westernmost point in continental Europe. Our first stop is Sintra, a Unesco World Heritage Site, where you will have the opportunity to visit the Palacio da Vila, a retreat used by the Portuguese Royal Family until its destitution in 1910. There will also be time to explore the numerous craft shops and to sample Sintra’s pastries; you shouldn’t leave without tasting a queijada or travesseiro. We will then drive towards Cabo da Rocha, Portugal’s very own Land’s End and the most westerly point of continental Europe. Travelling along this dramatic coast, we will pass the spellbinding Praia do Guincho before arriving at the elegant resort of Cascais. Highlights along this leg include the breathtaking Boca do Inferno cliffs and the magnificent panorama of the bay of Cascais. As we make our way back to Lisbon, we will pass through Estoril, with its world-famous gardens and casino on a rocky promontory overlooking a beach.
